Poem

by Donna M. Pinkston

From the black of night
and the warm wet darkness,
I birth myself into the light,
so that you might know me.

Watch the budding of the trees.
Feel the rain fall upon your
   shoulders.
Smell the wet fertile earth.
All about you is life;
lush and insistent.

As life goes by
you will come to know this
   within yourself.
You will come to know me.
For I am life;
   lush and insistent.
I am the desire that swells
   inside you,
saturating your body and soul
   with fervor.
Know me within yourself.
Sink into the dark depths of
   your desire,
of my desire.

Drink the sweat that your
   passions create.
Drink the ocean's salty water.
Drink from the womb of night,
from the darkness that dwells
   in each of you.

Be nurtured by the fluid of my
   womb
and be born into the light
only to turn to me again,
at night,
and ask for more.
