Practical Magic Review

by Andy

Practical Magic, the latest "witch movie" opened on Friday, Oct. 16th. Having seen the previews, I was looking forward to this movie and I wasn't disappointed.

The movie, a comedy, is about two sisters who are witches under a family curse. The curse causes anyone who loves a woman in their family to die. As you can imagine, they are not happy about their curse and try to fight it in various ways with their magic. And, of course, nothing goes as planned.

Not counting the obviously flashy Hollywood magic that you are going to find in any commercial movie about witches, I found the magic believable and touching. They invoked Hecate in their rituals, did things with herbs, and celebrated the turning of the seasons. When asked if witchcraft was satanic, one of the witches gave traditional reply: "There is no Satan in the Craft."

The main thing was that the characters felt like witches. My mind flashed back to other witches I had known when they were all getting drunk and making fun of their magic. I almost expected them to make Mary Poppins jokes as my friends have been know to do. They didn't, of course. They were saving that for later.

They had been raised as witches, by older crone witches, and had young maiden witches as children and it showed. Magic was an everyday thing to them and it was reflected in their everyday lives, as magic is in mine. It was a practical thing.
