This year was my first time to Spring Mysteries, and I was not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the location. Around me unfolded soft rolling hills, woods and water as far as I could see. There were small herds of deer grazing about the compound to top off the picture. It was easy to leave day-to-day life behind me and relax. The next step was to check in and get my sleeping assignment. Along with my name tag, I got a booklet with a map and a easy-to-read schedule.
Friday, I had breakfast and set out to explore my options. There were many workshops to choose from between rituals. Many vendors brought goodies to purchase, and I was a shopping fool. I also spent a lot of time in the shrines with the gods. Walking about was a treat for me, and I spent a great deal of my time wandering in thought. I participated in a parade with music and laughing that went to the water's edge and back. In the evening, there was a fashion show followed by a talent show. Let me tell you that these people are braver than me, and they did great.
Most of Saturday was spent attending the Mysteries. I would love to tell you all about it, but then it wouldn't be a mystery. I can tell you that the performers were brilliant and not once did they slip out of character the whole day. As one of the mystai (first-timers), I will be looking forward to next year when I can be one of the epoptai. We even had a wedding feast that I helped to serve as my work assignment.
Sunday was a day for packing up, cleaning the compound and saying good-bye for now to new friends. At the Mysteries, you can replenish your energy and do as much or as little as you want. The point is to be with people of a like mind and enjoy yourself. You're not alone out there, is what I got from the weekend.
