Beaver Chief is Back!

by Sylvana

Beaver Chief, my esteemed friend, teacher and former Widdershins interviewee, has returned from Europe! He is once more providing open medicine, prayer, healing, and drumming circles. You will find wisdom, humor and healing in these very powerful circles.

You will find the events listed in the calendar, and I highly recommend attending. There is no admission charge; gifts and donations are welcome but not required. If you want to spend a fun, magickal, healing evening with a phenomenal, mystical, warm, wise and engaging man, don't miss his circles - they are always unique!

I give thanks for love and healing from the extraordinary spirit that is Beaver Chief!

Jerry Garcia Memorial Drum Circle

In loving memory of Jerry Garcia, Seattle Peace Heathens and friends will gather Saturday, August 9, the second anniversary of his death - to celebrate his life and all it has brought us.

A drum circle, candlelight vigil, bells, twirling, dancing and celebration will be held. Bring drums, acoustic instruments, a picnic, incense, a smile, a blanket - no dogs, no alcohol. We need a miracle, every day. Gasworks Park, Seattle Washington, around 6 p.m. until ? Vend if you want to.

Library Flourishes

Sojourner's Martian magic began with Galileo's astronomy and Merlin's alchemy, an ancient system jealously preserved by scribes for centuries in secret archives. Today, you can access these secrets in 15,000 volumes at the As-You-Like-It Metaphysical Lending Library, 915 Pine St. on Capitol Hill.

The AYLI is celebrating its 36th birthday with an open house on Saturday August 30, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. All are invited to meet local astrologers, psychics, Reiki healers, Tarot readers and other spiritual leaders and teachers of the community.

In 1961, Carrie Fisher and Susie Swanson founded AYLI as one of the very few independent alternative metaphysical lending libraries in the country, with no religious affiliation. It began with the collection bequeathed them by Elizabeth McKittrick, one of Seattle's first astrologers. In 1975, the library moved to the Odd Fellows Temple on 915 E. Pine, and it is still open every day, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The library contains books on every subject - from astrology to Zen - plus a large collection of audio and videotapes and magazines.

The library also has its own Web site (www.frugal.com/~ayli) where members around the world can browse and even mail order requests to borrow books.

The nonprofit library is managed exclusively by volunteers, under the guidance of Philip Lipson, its cosmic librarian. A nominal yearly subscription enables AYLI to serve its membership community in Seattle, throughout North America and the world. For more details, contact Philip Lipson at As-You-Like-It Library, 915 E. Pine St., No. 401, Seattle WA 98122, or e-mail ayli@frugal.com or phone 206-329-1794.

Advertise With Us!

If you are a local pagan or magickal retailer, or pagan- or magick-friendly retailer, Widdershins wants your business.

We reach a diverse community, including pagans, Wiccans, ceremonial magicians, followers of New Age topics and more. We go out worldwide via the Web, and unlike many publications, we make sure our ads get into the online version. We also print 5000 copies of each issue, which are distributed throughout the Seattle area. Because our paper gets passed from reader to reader, each of our printed issues reaches at least 12,500 people, and our online issues reach many more. And the papers do get read - you should hear the comments from the people at distribution points when the paper is late! "Everybody's asking for the paper. When is it coming out?"

And we need your support. The paper at best breaks even every month. If you like this paper, if you want to support its continued publication, try advertising your product, service or shop in our market. You'll get results!

Ad Magician Wanted

Want to join the fast-paced world of magickal and pagan advertising?

Widdershins is supported almost completely through the ads in its pages. We need a person to send out information, make calls to potential advertisers and follow up with current advertisers who need a reminder call. It's not as intimidating as it sounds - we're pretty well known, liked and respected in the local pagan and magickal scene, and most people will be happy to hear from you. A person willing to work and able to make a commitment gets free ads and other perks (such as the company of the scintillating Widdershins staff). Prior sales experience is helpful but not necessary - anybody with focus and energy can help.

If you're interested, please call Sylvana 363-7896, press 1 and leave a message. Thank you!

Help Get The News Out

Widdershins' distribution is one of the most important jobs we do, and we need your help.

If you have a few spare hours a couple of times during the six-week period between issues, and a car, you can distribute to our pagan-friendly businesses. (Some distribution can even be done on the bus.) Distribution is a fun way to participate; you get to go to stores you might not normally check out and meet cool people. Store owners are delighted to see with you each new issue.

If you know of a place that would like to carry Widdershins, or want to deliver, please call Sylvana at 363-7896.

New Web Page Stuff!

We'd like to encourage you to try out the Widdershins Web page. We've added a new feature whereby you can type in a keyword (or phrase), and a list (of links) to Widdershins articles containing that word or phrase is returned to you. It's a great way to find articles when you can't remember the issue or volume number.

Heartfelt Apologies

Widdershins' staff begs the pardon of a number of people and businesses who either did not get their Litha issues, got them very late or didn't get a return call from us. These include (but are not limited to) The Hermit's Grove, Belltown Hempery, Dandelion Botanical and some subscribers.

We beg your forgiveness. We have had a number of problems during the Litha issue's cycle, including phone problems that left us unable to make calls for several weeks, spotty distribution we didn't catch until the end of the cycle and a number of delivery people who couldn't cover their areas, with no one to replace them.

Please know that we do the very best we can to serve you and the community, but we are a very small staff of volunteers, and we are all busy with jobs, lives and covens. If you do not get your issue or issues on time - please call us at (206) 363-7896 and leave a message, but please refrain from yelling at us. We will do our best to get your paper/s to you ASAP. Also, if we can't find someone to deliver to your area, you can always pick up papers.

Thank you for your patience.

We Abase Ourselves

Down on our noses in the gravel, we kiss the feet of Erika Ginnis, Andy Paik, Jerry Kaufman, Sebastian, Candace, Heather and anyone else who helped copyedit and proofread or deliver the Litha issue of Widdershins. We thank you for your invaluable aid, from the bottom of our hearts.
