Letter To The Editors

Dear Editors,

I wish to take this opportunity to address neo-pagan folk of the Northwest.

We all may recognize that the society we grew up and live in is predominantly Judeo-Christian. As such, we have been shaped and damaged by a moral code that was created over 2000 years ago by a dominator hierarchy of woman-fearing, Christian old men.

As a member of the neo-pagan community for over 25 years, I am concerned about the merit of morality in the neo-pagan movement. Some definitions of morality are: virtue, righteousness, rectitude and uprightness.

I find it odd, as we renew our ideology and rites, that we adopt the moral code of those who would condemn us. Our religion was stolen and convoluted by the Holy Roman Empire (which wasn't holy, wasn't Roman and wasn't much of an empire). I proudly declare, "I have no morals." I do, however, have a strong ethical code.

As we recreate what was and is a fertility religion, we celebrate our rites, excluding the sexuality for the most part, yet we go about huffily moralizing about this person, or that. I know this may shock some of you, but I regard sex as sacred and sexuality as an exquisite and precious thing.

To the few moralistic, self-righteous, self-appointed leaders and voices: If nudity offends you, don't look! Have an issue with sexuality? Stay chaste. Stay out of our bedrooms and shrines! Obsession with other peoples lives? Try living your own (or watch Oprah)!

Now, don't take me wrong. I am not saying we should go out into the woods and fuck like hares, although that would be great fun! But I do think that what one, two or more people do, consensually and responsibly, is blessed by the Goddess.

I know there a few who will shriek that I am a pervert. So, what's your point? I am an aging, white penis-bearer; the "PC Nazis" already see me as the enemy.

Just consider this, the next time you celebrate your religion, in your way: There are those who would jail, torture, and yes, maybe even kill you for your practices. Try to be tolerant and open-minded with others' customs, different as they may be from yours. The enemy will see us both with the same eyes.

If I've touched a nerve, or you have a problem with my words, address me. I wish to thank the gentle people at Widdershins for giving me this forum, and the love and trust we share. To the rest of you I say: Happy Beltaine and kiss the goat!
